Garden City, ID, United States (AHN) – An Idaho parent is upset because he says the charter school which is daughter attends has banned the word “Christmas” from a song she wanted to sing in the school talent show.
Michael Worth’s daughter attends the Garden City Community School, a public charter school. He said his daughter had her heart set on singing Alvin and the Chipmunks’ “Christmas Don’t Be Late” in her school’s talent show, but said the school requested she change the word “Christmas” to “Holiday.”
Worth said asking his daughter to substitute a word is a violation of her First Amendment right. He said the song is not offensive or inappropriate.
School Director Cindy Hoovel said the school has to be careful about separation of church and state laws because of an incident that occurred at another school, where teachers planned on using religious texts in the classroom.
She said other students who wanted to sing Christmas songs agreed to make the substitution from “Christmas” to “holiday.” Hoovel did say that the over-censorship of Christmas songs has become so politically correct that it is nothing short of ridiculous.
Worth’s daughter did not participate in the show, but her duet partner did, singing the new version of the song.
