As the media circus continues concerning Tiger Woods, Elin Nordegren, some woman named Rachel Uchitel, a car accident in a ritzy neighborhood in Windermere, Florida and a possible golf club incident. I think it’s time we take a step back and really look at what we’re asking for here.
Ever since Tiger decided to get into his car a few nights ago, or I should say a few mornings ago, and crashed into a neighbors tree after taking out a fire hydrant; the media has been dogging Tiger and his family for more details concerning the incident. Why were you out at 2:25 am? Were you drinking? Did Elin hit you with a golf club? Are you having an affair? Who is Rachel Uchitel?
Had Tiger killed someone, or hurt someone then it might be a viable question to ask if he had been drinking. But since nobody was hurt, except for maybe Tiger’s pride; it’s time to put this story to bed. Bottom line is this, it’s really none of our business.
Sure Tiger Woods is the most recognized athlete in the world; maybe in all of history. But does that give us a right to dig through the man’s garbage or dirty laundry looking for some sordid story of infidelity or drug use? Did Tiger ask for Jon and Kate like publicity? No. As a matter of fact, he’s a very private individual who values his time away from the golf course when he can get it.
Look at the facts in this case so far, whatever happened at his home the other night happened in his home. If he and Elin Nordegren were having some sort of tiff it was between Tiger and Elin. The last time I checked no member of the media or paparazzi were involved in their marriage. Given that fact, no member of the media or paparazzi has a right to know what was going on inside that house before the accident.
You might say since Tiger took to the street, a public road, and crashed into public property it became a public matter. I would say that’s between Tiger, the person who owns the property and the authorities in Florida. Still none of our business.
How about since Tiger makes so much money off of us we have a right to know; no not really. Nobody forces you to buy merchandise that Tiger endorses, nobody made you buy those Nike golf balls, nobody made you buy that Scotty Cameron putter. You had a choice, you have a choice. Either keep buying or quit buying, Tiger will still be a multi-millionaire and never bat an eye.
Tiger Woods and his wife Elin Nordegren have refused to be interviewed by the highway patrol for one specific reason. Once they allow the interview, all of the facts become a public matter, and they would like to keep it private. We live in a culture that thrives on knowing everything about everyone. It simply doesn’t compute that Tiger would want to keep this matter private.
For the sake of their kids, for the sake of privacy rights of all people, leave Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren alone. It’s really none of our business.

Leave Britney alone!

i so agree leave them alone…. no one ever gets into your businesses and publicizes it to the whole world….in time it will be sorted out whatever it is and its still none of our business

This article is moronic. What is the point of arguing about who’s business this is. The reality is that people are curious, and the media makes a business out of satisfying the public’s curiosity.
Further, Tiger Woods did ask for this kind of attention. He asks for it by accepting millions of dollars every month to put his name on golf equipment, clothing, gilette adds, etc. He makes his living as a public figure and could not have expected people to ignore it when he crashed an automobile into a tree at 3AM.
Get over yourself Shannon Bell.

it is obvious from the beginning; he was drunk or on drugs; then it is our business, he should get DUI. he was not driving sober for sure

I agree, leave Tiger alone. Who really cares? Florida police should chase criminals, not celebrities.

“But does that give us a right to dig through the man’s garbage or dirty laundry looking for some sorted story of infidelity or drug use?”
The word you were looking for is sordid, not sorted.

I agree with “Ahem.”

This whole thing is unreal. If he had just come right out and nipped the story in the bud it would not have gotten this far.
I was just forwarded a pretty funny account of what might have happened that night…you should check it out:

Well, I guess the point is that if his wife was committing domestic violence or if he was driving DUI or both, or if they lied to police, all of these things are illegal. If you or I did these things, we’d be arrested. Thusly, the cops are doing due diligence are looking into it. That’s all just stuff that comes with living in a society governed by laws. The *media’s* morbid interest and constant airing of the latest details occurs not b/c we *should* be inform, or *ought* to be informed but b/c the demand for the news is there and they are supplying the info. I don’t think anyone feels the right to know, but they are just interested that the holier than thou, squeaky clean Tiger Woods could be embroiled in something like this.

Well you’ve got to sort laundry too don’t you?

shannon bell he is a celeb. he has the attention whether he wants or not. get over it!

@Ahem, Colin, Andrea-Tiger Woods has NEVER chosen to live a public life. Tiger Woods simply chose to play golf. The public’s fascination with his ethnicity and skill as a golfer has attempted at every turn, to make him a public figure. HE has repeatedly & simply, tried to be a private citizen making a living doing what he loves. Should your skill, elevate you to an extraordinarily high salary, it would NOT suddenly entitled the public to every detail of your life, just as the PUBLIC is not entitled to every detail of Tiger’s life.
The sense of entitlement speaks more about our nation that chooses to idolize others AND allow our public fascination with others to raise our children. Tiger Woods is NOT my children’s role model. That is a job God gave to ME, and he will certainly hold me accountable if I ever pawn it off to someone else (athletes, actresses, celebrities, teachers, POTUS, etc).
@duh-NUMEROUS people run into trees in their own neighborhood’s daily and the police DON’T show up, so that too is a flawed premise. Additionally, your assertion that Tiger is holier than YOU is yours and yours alone. He has neither asserted holiness nor attempted it. Again, YOU have given him the title and power over your life. This incident should show you it is time to take your power back, live YOUR life and stop getting angry at folks who have been smart enough to accept the money, YOU have been dumb enough to give them.

Shannon-Thanks for writing this great article….
November 30th, 2009 at 3:01 pm
Leave Tiger Woods alone. You just wish you had his money and probably model wife. No can do,, bubba. That woman aint going no where. She knows what side her bread is buttered on and if others would go do their own bread, they wouldn’t have time to meddle with Tiger. Just cant deal with the black people being popular this decade. Ha! The joke is on you. You can bad mouth, but you cant touch.
November 30th, 2009 at 3:36 pm
I completely agree with this article. If you or I were involved in an incident like this, the police would write a ticket and, if no dui was suspected, be on their way. They certainly would not be spending this much time trying to interview me. If it was a domestic incident, it is between him and Elin unless he decides to press charges. Leave it alone…I’m already tired of hearing about it.
November 30th, 2009 at 5:53 pm
Thanks Renee, you’re right, Tiger only chose to be a golfer. God gave him tremendous ability and talent; that didn’t give us a ticket into his private life. If Tiger were an elected representative who made decisions that effect us I would say go ahead and dig.
But he isn’t, so we shouldn’t.
November 30th, 2009 at 11:04 pm
They’re celebrities…public figures–It IS our business!!! If you don’t want the public in your business, don’t become famous! Duh!
November 30th, 2009 at 11:39 pm
Rain-It is unfortunate that you see more value in gossip and innuendo than news about the people that SHOULD be famous and celebrated (celebrities). You know people like the 4 cops in Seattle whose lives were randomly taken. THEY dedicated their lives to protect and serve people in their communities, most they’d never met, which in my book makes THEM much more worthy of celebration.. i.e celebrity status.
As stated previously, this news story AND the hype surrounding it, reveals more about US (our distorted values) than Tiger Woods, his wife or his life….

Shannon:
It’s funny. I notice that this particular thread has 22 hits, (not counting mine), yet the other topics you write about which are more important haven’t really been commented upon.
Is it that people troll the Internet looking for blogs like yours and only comment when it is a tabloid-worthy topic, and not a really real topic involving the future of our Great Nation?
Do any of these people writing their vitriolic and asinine comments actually know Tiger Woods personally? Or are they simply tabloid-whores who find their self-worth in gossip and trying to be the next Lindsey Lohan or Britney Spears?
Interesting.

Right on Shannon. Thanks for your feedback over on my site.
