Lookout Harry Potter, there’s a new kid on the block. With the release of the sequel to the first hit movie, Twilight is fast becoming a pop culture sensation. But everyone’s not thrilled about “New Moon”; the Vatican called Twilight a “deviant moral vacuum”.
Twilight is a story about a Vampire falling love with a teenage girl in high school, sort of 90210 meets Bram Stocker. It was an instant hit with the teens and tweens and this current edition features not only Vampires but a gang of Werewolves.
Monsignor Franco Perazzolo, the Vatican’s culture council leader said:
“This theme of vampires in Twilight combines a mixture of excesses that, as ever is aimed at young people and gives a heavy esoteric element.” He adds, “This film is nothing more than a moral vacuum with a deviant message and as such should be of concern.”
The Monsignor may be on to something about the moral vacuum, but Twilight isn’t the only moral vacuum in today’s society. You could throw in MTV, American Idol and the whole lot of reality television programs. I also think that honorable mention in the moral vacuum award should go to gangsta rap. Believe me, I could go on.
The fact that the Vatican has blasted Twilight New Moon as a “deviant moral vacuum” should be of no great surprise. The Catholic Church in the past has targeted such movies as the Harry Potter series as well as Dan Brown’s DaVinci Code. Ahh, it just makes the kids want to see it more. Haven’t they figured that out by now?
