Former GOP candidate for President Fred Thompson says the war in Afghanistan has been lost. I know what you’re thinking out there; how could good ole’ Fred drop a bomb like this on us when we spent so much time railing against Harry Reid’s declaration that Iraq was lost? Give me a minute and I’ll try to explain. Watch the video and listen to his explanation, he’s laying it at the feet of President Obama dithering as well as his mindset in general.
I see what Fred Thompson is trying to accomplish by proclaiming the Afghanistan war lost; but I’m not really sure I would have said it myself. In the video, Thompson has pretty good justification for why he says what he says. But with all due respect to Senator Thompson I think I would have just let Obama hang that noose around his neck himself. He’s doing a pretty good job with that at the moment.
Everything Thompson says about Obama’s attitude towards Afghanistan, our troops, the political climate or war in general is true. It can’t really be denied. The enemy is emboldened, the longer Obama takes to make a decision the stronger they grow. When’s the last time you saw a Commander and Chief take months to act on advice given him from a General in the field of battle? Never comes to mind.
The left will have a field day with this no matter how it’s interpreted. They’ll just see this as justification for talking down the war and troops for the past eight years. The fact that Fred Thompson would say the war in Afghanistan is lost with troops in the field of battle is really indefensible. Despite the fact that the plurality of what he said is inarguable.

I made a similar argument over a month ago. The war has become an issue of saving face at this point, nothing more, just like the end of Vietnam.
