A 37 year old Los Angeles man has been arrested for murder in connection with a suspicious miscarriage; Joshua Woodward is being held on $2 million dollars bail. Police said that an investigation revealed “suspicious circumstances” of a miscarriage. The fetus was believed to be about 13 weeks gestation.

This is a tragic yet interesting case; if Joshua Woodward can be arrested for murder in connection with a miscarriage, how could the mother of the same 13 week old child willfully “abort” the child without criminal prosecution?

This brings us to the same question that proponents and opponents of abortion battle everyday about. When does life begin? If a man can be brought up on charges of murder for his alleged role in the miscarriage of a child, how can a woman intentionally end a pregnancy without being charged with a crime?

If the liberal mantra about a woman’s right to choose is correct, Joshua Woodward shouldn’t be charged with anything other than perhaps the crime perpetrated against the mother in the case. But on the other hand, if Joshua Woodward can in fact be charged with murder, doesn’t that in fact make abortion murder by fiat?

If Joshua Woodward did in fact commit a crime against the mother of the child which caused the miscarriage and death of the 13 week old fetus; he should be charged with murder. But it’s time for a little clarity; moral clarity. Either abortion is murder or it’s not. Inducing a miscarriage by assault is murder or it’s not. They’re not mutually exclusive.
