What is one of the main arguments of liberals fighting for universal healthcare? If you said obscene profits you’d be correct. But according to a report by the AP (which has its own credibility problems at times) insurance companies aren’t making all that much of a profit, let alone obscene profits.

Democratic Leaders Discuss Fair Competition In Health Insurance Industry

According to the report insurance company profit margins run about 6%, in some cases a point or two more, in others a point or two less. The AP goes on to compare the insurance industry with other industries to see how their profits stack up.

Health insurers placed a 2.2% profit margin for 2008, giving them 35th place on the Fortune 500 list of top industries. According to the source, railroads and network and communications equipment far outpaced health insurers in profit margin.

Looks like the democrats have a little problem here; they’ve spent precious time and money trying to paint the insurance industry as the villain, standing in the way of healthcare reform for their own personal gain and obscene profits. Nancy Pelosi (D) said this:

-”I’m very pleased that (Democratic leaders) will be talking, too, about the immoral profits being made by the insurance industry and how those profits have increased in the Bush years.”

A Moveon.org ad said this:

-”Health insurance companies are willing to let the bodies pile up as long as their profits are safe.”

Can anyone say foot in mouth disease? A debate about any issue in this country is fine; that’s what this country was founded for. But debating an issue with falsehoods and untruths just to push an agenda, now that’s obscene.
