President Obama’s demand that Israel halt the building project in East Jerusalem was rejected today. This adds to the tension that has been building between the United States and Israel since President Obama was inaugurated in January.

Israels Prime Minister Netanyahu delivers a speech near Tel Aviv

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said talking about the project:

“We cannot accept the idea that Jews will not have the right to live or to build anywhere in east Jerusalem. We cannot accept such restrictions,” Netanyahu said at the start of the weekly cabinet meeting.

“Unified Jerusalem is the capital of the Jewish people and the state of Israel. Our sovereignty over it is unquestionable,” he said.

No word from the Administration about Israel’s decision to reject the U.S. demand. A report last week said that Israel’s ambassador in Washington was asked to come to the State Department where the demand was given.

What makes the Obama Administration actually think that a sovereign nation that has been a staunch ally of ours for decades is just going to roll over and simply give in to their whims?

Obama is so determined to “make” something happen in the middle east peace process, that he is perfectly willing to throw away the relationship with our greatest ally in that all important region.

I for one am glad that Israel rejected Obama’s demand to halt the East Jerusalem project. Obama has given Israel no indication that he plans on being a friend to them if they need us. Netanyahu has enough problems without worrying about Obama.
